[00:01] [Ed] Here we are, day two in sunny Costa Rica, as you can see behind us, we’re literally in the jungle, which is amazing and beautiful.
And you can hear the jungle birds behind us swapping away, so that’s kind of fun.

[00:17] [Phoebe] Which is one of the reasons why we wanted it to go outside so that you could see possibly some things run past us.
And here all the amazing sounds.

[00:27] [Unknown] So what happened yesterday?

[00:28] [Phoebe] Oh my gosh, okay, so yesterday was really orientation day.
People are flying in, getting their bearings, getting all set up, that type of stuff that happens on day one.
And then we ran right around dinner time, right before dinner time.
We had an orientation, kind of a lay of the land of what, you know, what to expect in Costa Rica when you leave the resort.
What the town is like, you know, where to find things, all that money, shopping, whatever.
And then we had a speed dating event, which was a lot of fun.

[01:02] [Ed] Yeah, and it’s a different kind of speed dating event.
Everyone’s given a nut or a bolt.
So if you’re a gentleman, you get a bolt.
If you’re a lady, you get a nut.
And they’re all different sizes.
And so the object of the game is to go around the room and find your matching nut bolt combination.
And if it matches, then you introduce yourselves, have a little bit of a conversation.
And then five minutes later, you rotate.
So it’s kind of fun.
And it’s not just your standard, you know, ring the bell, go to the next table, ring the bell, go to the next table.
You kind of, it’s a little bit of a scavenger hunt, too.

[01:40] [Unknown] Which makes it that much more fun and more interesting.

[01:45] [Phoebe] And it’s funny, too, because some of the guys will have a really large bolt.
And your nuts release small.
And so I found myself walking up to people and, well, oh my God, your bolt is so big.
So you start laughing and it sparks conversation.
And then, you know, you get to know people in a different way.
And sometimes that’s all we need is just a little bit of an icebreaker.
So that was a lot, a lot of fun.

[02:15] [Ed] Yeah.
And you know, the typical questions about how do you get in the lifestyle?
Is this your first trip?
Have you ever been to Costa Rica before?
And away you go.
And some people were a little rebellious.
And if they didn’t match, they stayed and talked anyway.
Yes.
Which kind of made sense because some people lingered a little longer when they were talking with their matches, et cetera.

[02:41] [Phoebe] Yeah.
Sometimes you find a good connection.
You’re like, ooh, I want to know more.
Then we had dinner.

[02:47] [Unknown] Yeah.

[02:48] [Phoebe] And dinner was, oh my God, dinner was amazing.
So every day we get the menu of what it’s going to be.
Last night it was fish.
You got an entire fish wrapped in this aluminum foil, the head on it and the tail and everything.
And then we had rice and beans and plantains.
And what else did we have with that meal?

[03:07] [Unknown] I can’t remember.

[03:08] [Ed] There were some vegetables and…

[03:13] [Unknown] I don’t know.

[03:14] [Phoebe] All I remember is how good the damn fish was.
Yeah, the fish was very good.
Very good.
A whitefish.

[03:20] [Ed] It’s amazing.
Yeah, and there’s usually beans and rice with every meal.
And usually some kind of a baked or fried plantain, which is great for dessert.
It tastes so good.

[03:31] [Phoebe] And we say beans and rice.
But these are not your standard beans and rice.

[03:35] [Unknown] They’re like better beans and rice.

[03:38] [Ed] Yeah, it’s seasoned.
So it’s almost like a Spanish rice where it’s got some flavoring and some seasoning.
But it’s very unique to Costa Rica and some yummy stuff.

[03:48] [Phoebe] So then we had the dinner and we got ready and we all hopped on this massive bus
and we headed into town, which was a whole five, seven minutes.

[03:57] [Guest] Right.

[03:58] [Phoebe] So we could have just walked.
But the bus was nice because some of us had some high heel flip flops.
And we got off and we got to walk through town.
We took everyone through a tour of what to see in town, where to stop or where the hot spots are.
And we stopped at a bar.
The goal was to stop at two bars.

[04:19] [Unknown] But during this, we were also doing a poker crawl where you pick a card and at the end of the night,

[04:24] [Phoebe] if you’ve got whoever wins poker gets a free weekend at Sea Mountain.

[04:33] [Ed] Yeah.
Sea Mountain in.

[04:35] [Phoebe] Yeah.

[04:36] [Unknown] So there was a winner.

[04:39] [Phoebe] And the first bar we went to was the own bar.

[04:44] [Unknown] Yes.

[04:45] [Phoebe] It was a lot of fun.
The drinks were expensive.
But it was a lot of fun and the music was great.
In fact, I took a video in the bathroom.
I haven’t looked at it yet to see how good it is.
And so if it’s good, I’ll post it up on TikTok for you guys.
You didn’t know that part.

[05:01] [Ed] I didn’t know that part.

[05:02] [Phoebe] I was like, what?

[05:05] [Unknown] Yeah.

[05:06] [Ed] So the own bar was fun.
Very young crowd there.
And so we were getting a lot of looks because we were a big group.
Most people kind of came with two or three of their friends.
And they were there for the normal, the normal downtown crowd.

[05:20] [Unknown] And we were the not the unusual downtown crowd.

[05:23] [Ed] Yeah.

[05:24] [Phoebe] So we were new.
And it was interesting.
There was a lot of American music being played in this bar in English.
So that was kind of surprising.
But we loved it because we could relate to it.
And maybe the DJ did that on purpose.
I’m not sure when he saw us.
Could be.

[05:40] [Ed] Now let me think about it.

[05:41] [Unknown] Could be.

[05:43] [Phoebe] We were done there.
We spent about, I don’t know, an hour there.
And then we went back out and we went to the next bar.
There was actually two other bars we were supposed to go to.
But we ended up at the Marlin because that music was way better than the other one.
Back the other one didn’t have any music, which is why we all went to the Marlin.

[06:02] [Ed] Yeah.
The green room had ended the live music.
Usually there’s live music played there.
And they were done performing for the night by the time we had gotten there, which was early.
Oh, yeah.

[06:15] [Guest] It wasn’t that late.

[06:16] [Ed] No.
And so we all kind of migrated over to the Black Marlin, which was laser lights, disco tech, stripper pole in the middle of the room.
A lot of people having fun, a lot of people taking their turn on the pole.

[06:31] [Unknown] And it was, it was a lot of fun.

[06:33] [Ed] Yeah.

[06:34] [Phoebe] Guys and girls were on the pole.
And apparently we were making such a big scene that the locals were shooting TikTok videos of us.
And the DJ was shooting TikTok videos of us.

[06:46] [Ed] So we may be, we may be in a bunch of Costa Rican TikTok accounts showing.
Yes.
Showing up in social media.
Yeah.

[06:55] [Unknown] So we’ll see.

[06:56] [Phoebe] Yes.
It was, oh my God.
So much fun.

[06:59] [Unknown] So much fun.

[07:00] [Phoebe] We drank a lot.
It was a lot of fun.
I danced a lot.
Oh my God.

[07:04] [Unknown] And my body is sore today.

[07:05] [Ed] Oh.
Yeah.
Back.
Yeah.
Between the hiking before, uh, up at Erinall and yesterday walking around and bombing and pool.

[07:12] [Phoebe] This is a very active trip.
So if you come with us, you know, it’s, you, you do have your relaxing time by the pool.
But you’re also out on excursions either hosted by us that you paid for as part of your package.
Or you go do extra ones because you have free days as well.
So people are coordinating their own excursions that they want to go on on their free days, which are Monday and Wednesday.

[07:36] [Unknown] So we’re trying to choose which ones that we want to go on and then coordinate that with others because it’s fun to do things with others.

[07:44] [Phoebe] Ha ha.

[07:45] [Unknown] Imagine that.

[07:47] [Phoebe] Some of the ones that we find intriguing are the chocolate tour because there’s also a butterfly enclosure nearby.
You get to actually make your own chocolate.
Of course, see the history of it.
Walk through the field all behind the scenes, which I personally love.
And there’s a repellent on the waterfall.
And of course, you can ATV and horseback ride and zip line and all that stuff.
Most of what we have done before in previous vacations.
So we want to do something a little different.

[08:17] [Ed] Because we’re always into trying new things.

[08:19] [Unknown] Right.
Is this by the live?

[08:23] [Phoebe] All right.
Last stop of last night was a coquel hotel, which is a hotel that’s been not set up.
It’s it’s a very old hotel.
And so the owners decided that they would make this hotel a place for the.
And prostitutes because prostitution is legal to come and have a safe place to meet the men and then take them to the hotel room and, you know, have a good time.
Right.
So since prostitution, like I said is legal here, all the women are licensed.

[09:01] [Unknown] They have regular health checks and they carry this card and health card around with them.
So if you are curious about a coquel girl, which they they call on the coquel girls instead of a prostitute, you can always ask for her card.

[09:19] [Phoebe] If you want to check to see if she’s licensed and safe and STI safe and all that stuff.

[09:24] [Unknown] So yeah, it was an amazing place.

[09:27] [Phoebe] You go in, there’s a pool, there’s music, there’s my god, the food was amazing there.
And like most of our clubs, the food is pretty good.
So the women were they looked a little younger this time than three years ago when we were there.

[09:45] [Ed] Yeah, there wasn’t as much of a variety of, you know, body shapes and ages as the last time we were here.
Yeah.

[09:53] [Unknown] Yeah.

[09:54] [Ed] Yeah, they they did seem a lot younger than I did.

[09:57] [Phoebe] Maybe we’re just older, I don’t know.

[09:59] [Ed] There is that.

[10:01] [Phoebe] But it was fun to see all the sexy ladies and the men hanging out and kind of how this process worked and how the ladies would, you know, sort of, you know, saddle up to the guy and it’s a guy.
You know, how they negotiated right business, right?

[10:17] [Unknown] Right.

[10:18] [Phoebe] But it was very, very safe and it was fun to be with our group and watching and observing, having drinks and food and.

[10:25] [Ed] Yeah, it’s entertaining just because of the scene and how everyone’s interacting.
There was another, there was a woman walking around, I think trying to sell a purse, a knit purse, which was very interesting.
I’m not sure exactly what she was doing, but it looked like that.

[10:41] [Phoebe] I thought it was just her technique of trying to like, I don’t know.

[10:45] [Ed] It was a little confusing as to what she was actually trying to accomplish, but it was, it was interesting to say at least.

[10:53] [Unknown] Yeah.

[10:54] [Ed] The other thing that’s really interesting about sex work in Costa Rica is imps and madams are not allowed.
They’re independent contractors.
They’re their own entrepreneur.
It’s their own business.
So it kind of changes the dynamics and the government doesn’t believe in exploitation.
These are women who are out there doing their own thing.
So it’s different.
It’s a lot different than what we have in the United States and it seems to be working for them in the local economy.

[11:29] [Phoebe] Yeah, and you’re not going to stop that type of profession sex work or things that you choose to do.
No matter how many regulations you put on it, so what they did is they just made it safer.
That way, you know, people aren’t on the streets having to, you know, I don’t know, being in risky situations sometimes.
Right.
This is very safe for them.
And so it’s great.
I mean, it’s, it’s a win-win for everybody quite honestly.

[12:03] [Ed] Yeah, yeah.

[12:04] [Unknown] Like I said, very different dynamic than what we have in the United States where it’s, it’s shunned, it’s shamed.
It’s illegal.

[12:15] [Ed] So it’s a very risky process.
You know, you can’t report someone abusing a sex worker because it’s a crime to even engage in that.
And so there’s just a whole bunch of layers of how that just doesn’t work for anybody.
Anybody can be taken advantage of in that situation in here because it is legal and regulated and controlled.
It seems to be working very well for them and it’s been doing, it’s been going forever.

[12:45] [Unknown] Yeah, many, many years.
So that was fun.

[12:48] [Phoebe] We got to really enjoy that environment and then I was tired.

[12:54] [Ed] Yes, we came home and did our own thing.
We did.

[12:59] [Phoebe] We considered dipping ourselves into the pool to cool off, but I was, I was very tired.
I just needed to sleep.
But we didn’t sleep.
No, there were, there are other activities that occurred.
The, the, the bar, the dancing, the drinks and all those sexy ladies at the Cokal hotel really got me turned on.
So I had my way with it last night.

[13:24] [Unknown] Did our thing.

[13:26] [Guest] So today, always a good time.

[13:28] [Phoebe] Yeah, I enjoyed it.
Let’s see what else, what else, what else?
Oh, yesterday, we, yeah, we kind of glossed over that.
The pool time, which was a standard pool time.
Honestly, naked, a lot of naked bodies.
We had, oh, the theme was animal print.
A lot of people had animal ears, animal bathing suit, maybe bottoms, or a top, if you were both.
And we had the bull in the pool, the writing, what do you call it?
It’s the writing bull.
Yeah, it’s an inflatable bull that kind of rocks around.

[14:03] [Ed] And so, you know, not what it is.
It’s practicing because at the end of the week, there’s going to be a contest to see who can stay on the longest.
Yes.

[14:10] [Guest] So that’ll be fun.

[14:11] [Ed] Yes.
That damn thing is slippery.
It’s really hard to stay on and it moves around.

[14:16] [Phoebe] It was so funny.
People were making so many jokes about one of the guys got up there.
They’re laughing about his butt cheeks, which is clamping onto the bull.
And the guys were trying to throw him off.
And he had some strong legs, or, as they were saying, butt cheeks that were really holding him on.
And then one of our other lady friends, she was in the pool without a bathing suit.
And she was making fun of herself about…

[14:40] [Ed] I mean, she put her butt up in the air and…

[14:42] [Phoebe] Throw her leg over, and now you can see all the way up…

[14:45] [Unknown] Up to her cervix.

[14:46] [Ed] To China.

[14:47] [Unknown] So she’s always a hoot.

[14:51] [Phoebe] She makes a lot of fun of herself and makes me laugh.

[14:53] [Ed] And very competitive.
Her goal is to…
Yes.
To win.
To stay up.
Yes.
So it’s on.

[15:01] [Phoebe] Have you been practicing?

[15:02] [Ed] I have not.
I have to get up on my bull riding skills.

[15:06] [Phoebe] Today we’re going to have some pool games.
We are going to talk about that tomorrow.
And I think…
Oh!
One last thing.
That was really exciting about yesterday.

[15:17] [Unknown] Talk about it.

[15:18] [Phoebe] The little furry things.
Yeah.

[15:20] [Ed] So it’s typically at this resort.
There’s a troop of monkeys that goes through every morning.
And they pick mangoes.
And the ones that they don’t like, they throw down onto the ground or onto the…
Tin ruse, which makes a ton of noise.
Well, because of the strange rainfall that they’ve been having this year.
The date palm bloomed late.
And so the fruit now is ripe and ready.
And so the monkeys are coming down to the pool area.
And eating the fruit.

[15:49] [Unknown] And it was great.

[15:51] [Ed] Because we’re all sitting in the pool having conversation.
And this group of monkeys start climbing and jumping through the trees.

[15:59] [Phoebe] Like, a dozen, not even kidding.
Oh, yeah.

[16:02] [Ed] At least a dozen, if not, double that.
Big monkeys, all kapuchin monkeys, so the white face monkeys.
And baby monkeys, like little tiny ones with their moms.
And they’re either hanging onto them.
And you’d watch the older, more experienced monkeys and the mother monkeys jumping.
Like, barely getting a hold of the branch when they land on it.
And then you could see that the younger kind of teenage monkeys
that weren’t quite as sure of themselves were very hesitant to jump.
And one of them, mom and monkeys, had to come back and get the younger monkey.
And take them across.
But it was so funny to watch him go, I don’t know.
I’m not sure if I can make it.
And he’d go down and up the banana leaf.
It was quite entertaining.
And everybody got to see a little discovery channel action at the pool.

[16:59] [Phoebe] And I love how we do things just like animals do.

[17:04] [Unknown] Or, yes.

[17:06] [Phoebe] We’re similar in the sense where you need some momentum.
So they would literally like, go back and then launch themselves forward.
They didn’t just go point, right?
They catapulted themselves from one tree to the next.
And it was just one to kind of see them do this whole process and go from tree to tree to tree and tree.

[17:30] [Unknown] Yeah.

[17:31] [Ed] So we’ll see more of them today.
We’ll see more of the bats as a bat up underneath our roof.
I know.
It’s super cute.
They’re so cute.
Little fuzzy guys.
And then all kinds of other wildlife running around.
And iguanas and little spiders making guests.
So, yeah.
Good stuff.
Lots of fun.

[17:50] [Unknown] All right, everyone.

[17:51] [Phoebe] That is it for day two.

[17:54] [Ed] Well, the day one recap.
Second recording.
But yes.

[17:58] [Phoebe] Yeah.
It is day two.
But day one recording.
Sorry.

[18:02] [Unknown] That’s going to be a long one.
All right.
Talk to you later.
Oh, one last thing before you go.
